Reverse Lights are ALWAYS on!?!?!?

I drive a 1998 Saab 900S, 2.3 liter, 4-cylinder, non-turbo engine. Occasionally my reverse lights would stay turned on even AFTER shifting out of reverse into drive. Not all the time, but most of the time. Sometimes the quirk is rectified by shifting to park, then to drive again, and I've been dealing with this problem for quite some time already, but tonight they stayed on no matter how many times I shifted from Park to Drive (and we're talking about an automatic transmission, of course).
The car runs pefectly fine otherwise, so I never felt compelled to have it inspected and repaired so as long as it didn't create any safety issues (which it hasn't). The only problem I've been getting is being told by other motorists (stopped at a red light) or my friends or coworkers of this anomaly. The first couple of times, it was OK, but now it's gotten to the point of me getting sick and tired of telling people "yeah, yeah, I know" after every time that they tell me my reverse lights are still on as I'm driving. I know that they only mean well, but frankly it's getting annoying and just downright embarassing at this point.
So my question is: What could possibly be causing this problem? A bad fuse, or what? Is this something that can be easily fixed or would I have to take it to a shop to have a professional look into it?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Michael
