$1,500 is not a lot if it gets you a decent car

In fact, it's downright cheap if the car is otherwise sound. Let's look at the costs.

Full front and rear brakes are the expensive part, especially if you need calipers, rotors and pads all around. But then you're done with brakes for a few years (40K miles front, 80K rear). If someone is doing the work figure on up to $800. Half of that is labor and will also get you new brake fluid (important!).

Rebuilt front axles are $100 to $130 each plus labor (about 3 hours). But if it's just the CV joint boots that are split (not uncommon) it would be less expensive.

A tune-up is 2 hours of time and about $75 in parts (spark plugs, oil, air, fuel and cabin filters, flushing coolant, changing oil and transmission fluid.)

The hydraulic leak is the unknown. If the car is a manual transmission you may need a clutch master cylinder. Have this looked at specifically. If it's the slave cylinder it's a much bigger and more costly job. But a leak could be power steering fluid. OTOH, if the car is an automatic, the leak may be transmission fluid and may be less of an issue. Have someone who knows Saabs check this out.

The rear axle should be fine. Unless it has been bent somehow there should be zero issues.

I'd take the car to an independent Saab tech who can give you a realistic perspective on the car. Check here in the Mechanics Listings to find a good shop in your area.

You should easily be able to get 75K+ miles out of this car with little other than normal maintenance once you get it back on the road. Just be compulsive about maintenance, These cars normally go to 200K miles without a lot of drama--if maintained. In your case, it's not a bad return on the $1500 or so it may cost. And you get a really strong, safe car, too. Even if you spend $2,000 you are getting a lot more car than you would if went out and bought some worn down car that is running but has 150,000 miles on it.

Good luck. Check back here for more help/advice.
