99 oxygen sensor dilema Posted by Roger D [Email] (#1121) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Roger D) on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 12:33:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Got a 99 9-3 with a bad head gasket. 65K miles 2 owner car. Price was right-I think. I only drove it around the block before I towed it home because it was spurting coolant out by the Distributor plug. Got the HD done last week. Runs great but I'm already getting coolant seepage by the distributor plug-I'll deal with that next week. This week I need to get it smogged in NoCal. It's the 2 speed test. Problem is I have a CE light that is still present after 120 miles on the road. I ran the scan tool on streaming data and get almost no activity for both oxygen sensors. They show very low voltage at startup then peg on 0.000 volts. I get 2 codes that both say oxygen sensor heater faults. So it looks like the PO ran the car while loosing coolant and took out the sensors. I think it's possible the cat was damaged with sensors, so here's the dilema. I have a cat and rear sensor from a '99' roll over wreck that had a clean engine. The problem is it's the early '99' with the early sensor location. My '99' has the later sensor that is just downstream from the turbo. Can I borrow a sensor from an available early '99' loaner car to see if it passes smog? In other words are both sensors functionally the same with the ECU? Is the difference in part numbers for early and later just the difference in harness length?
