Well, I’ve done my best to search the boards but just can’t seem to find the info needed.
The subject: A new to me(3weeks) 1999 9-3 5spd with 165,000miles. Great previous owner with great maintenance records and work done at a shop I know.
The symptoms: Yesterday started the car and heard a groan from the power steering pump, drove a couple of miles to the local parts place and bought power steering fluid that claims to be compatible with everything (Prestone) with the idea that I would top up the fluid then flush with Pentosin over the weekend. Opened the reservoir and saw foam, filled to the correct level. Drove ½ mile (no noise and all seemed well) and parked only to find fluid on the ground(from the back of the engine) and the reservoir foamy again. Refilled started car and looked for leaks. Rack was wet where the three hoses connect but didn’t see any leaks. No further loss of fluid in a short drive around the parking lot so I drove the car home (3miles) and all was well. Checked fluid and it is still fine. The only part of the power steering system that shows signs of leakage remains the point on the rack where the hoses connect.
The return hose (the all rubber one rack to reservoir) had a few cracks so I thought at the very least I should start by replacing it, from searching the board 3/8” inside diameter fuel hose seemed like it should work so I purchased 3ft. Started removing the fusebox per the instructions found searching the board and have run into a snag…Have removed the nut and the clip on the cowl, lifted the box a bit but it seems the wiring harness is holding it back. Can’t really move it far enough to allow access. To compound the problem the hose clamp is facing the clutch master cylinder so I can’t get a socket or really long screw driver on it and can’t reach it with a 7mm wrench.
Any thoughts at all?
TIA
Marc
