I did a near identical thing two years ago - found a 50K mile black '95 3dr Turbo outside Chicago, flew out from Maine, drove 21hrs back. Paid $5K. The car was fantastic, and the only reason I am not still driving it is that I got a killer deal on a new 9-3SC last year. I REALLY liked that car!
Not too many dilemmas with these cars really, mine needed a clutch cable, DIC, and exhaust in the time I had it. Otherwise just the usual maintenance stuff. Sludge is generally not an issue. Adding the steering rack brace and rear swaybar will transform the handling.
As to the price, I think it is rather silly to compare a near pristine (assuming it really is, of course) low-mileage car to the average well-beat used car 14yo. It would cost you more to make an average one super nice than to just buy a super nice one in the first place, and the reality is you can't make a high-mileage beat car as nice as a low-mileage car that is nice to start with. Try to bargain with the dealer, but otherwis buy it and enjoy it.
