The oil trap (the box under the intake manifold) has flexible hoses that lead to it and go from it in to the sump. The turbo oil drain tube does the same.
All flexible ("rubber") hoses in the system are subject to degradation after crankase vapors break down the oil additive package (TBN) so the environment becomes acidic. The ones that drain back into the sump are the ones that are likely to contribute to oil pump strainer getting clogged.
I have driven mostly highway miles on my car and the hoses were in decent shape when I changed them at apporximately 100,000 miles as I did the PCV fix #6.
I have seen lots of 9-3 owners on this forum with deteriorated hoses well before this mileage, and I think they are running under conditions that are ripe for sludging. I think the deteriorating hoses are like a canary in coal mine with regard to a warning signal about internal engine condition.
At high mileage (100,000+) my opinion is that all of the flexible hoses need replaced, since they have suffered long term exposure to an environment that will result in their eventual breakdown.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it !
