I recently purchased a one owner 2001 SE 9-3 convertible (automatic) with 117K miles. One of of the instrument lights (the bulb for the shift indicator positions) was burned out. Yesterday, I replaced it and now the car won't start. It has a new battery and cranks over strongly, but won't catch. Occasionally, the engine will fire for about a 1/2 sec while cranking and not catch. The indicator lights on the dash light up normally while cranking. I checked the fuel pump and it is running fine with plenty of pressure at the fuel rail. I put in new spark plugs and swapped the DI cassette with a good working unit on another car. The DI from the convertible worked in the car that I pulled the test DI from, so that isn't the problem. My next plug and play will be the crankshaft position sensor, but I don't understand how any of this would show up from replacing an instrument bulb.
Aside from the no start, the one thing that I am really puzzled about is that after I changed the bulb and turned the car on the milage on the digital odometer had changed from 117K to 113K miles! I have no explanation and pulled the instrument cluster out again to make sure that I had all of the ribbon connector and jumper connections solid. I read somewhere that when an instrument panel is replaced, it needs to be mated with the car with a Tech II. The SID goes through the checks and comes back with "Checks OK" so the security system seems to be satisfied.
I'm at my wits end. Either this was one of the most unfortunate concidences I have ever experienced working on cars, or I'm overlooking something that is associated with starting and the instrument cluster.
Any help and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
SteveB
