First, us T5 owners don't have a MAF, so that's not a concern. If I did, I'd be more leary of a K&N.
Second, a turbo motor (as opposed to a NA 928) is much more sensitive to improving airflow - or more specifically, improving the airflow beyond stock when you've made other mods. In other words, when you take your air needs beyond stock, a non-stock intake system can very possibly boost HP. One has to assume the stock system is designed to supply all the air needed at stock tune, but open up your intake, your exhaust, modify your turbo... you may very well be restricted by the stock system. From the documentation I could find, a K&N was good for 6 to 10HP at WOT. Check with some of the guys on the performance board, they may have dyno numbers.
As for the "larger particles" issue - it is true that the K&N and similar will let in larger particles until it picks up a bit of dust. But, that process doesn't take all that long. Smart K&N users don't clean very often... once a year is probably too often.
Lastly, one of the most important air intake mods is to get the aid supply coming from a cool location. There are plenty of posts here on people who modified the stock filter inlet to make it larger and pull air from down by the bumper. One of the worst mods (IMHO) is to install an "open air" type K&N not in a box inside the engine compartment. Hot air is NOT what you want, especially with a turbo. Modifying the inlet is something every Saabowner should do.
