As mentioned, you'd need to sell the large stuff locally, unless you are into crating and shipping by truck. You can make a lot of money selling the smaller items on Ebay or Craigslist or here. Be aware that it takes lots of time to photo and list items, then manage the questions and sales, then pack and ship the items.
The USPS has made it a bit easier as they will give you boxes for priority mail at no cost. They also have a fair number of 24 hour self-service shipping centers that make shipping go much faster than it does standing at the counter. Fedx and UPS might be cheaper once you get into larger and heavier items. If you use Paypal/Ebay, you can print shipping labels and postage on-line (assuming you have a scale).
You can check in your area, but usually you can get $200-300 for even a shell of a car for the scrap metal value from people who will tow it away when you are all done.
