When adjusting the cable, I broke the long threaded rod. (Actually I was replacing the cable, but same thing...)

If you use PBBlaster to loosen rust on that adjustment, remember that it's not a good lubricant. After it began moving, I should have worked some grease into the threads & worked the nut back & forth. With no grease, the nut just got harder & harder to turn, until that sickening feeling when the threaded rod begins twisting.
