It's all in your point of view. It's a really interesting piece of mechanical engineering. The only mistake they made was to build the unit out of an alloy casting. If it had been steel, these things would work until long after the car was worn out.
Instead of thinking about a manual option, it might make more sense to engineer a bracket that holds the motor head down so it can't twist. I put the kit on mine years ago when I heard about it... the casting bent last year in the middle (kit kept the hinge straight). THe only downsode to a bolt on bracket is that you can't do the quick release when you want to go manual. I'm thinking that maybe some arrangement with wingnuts would allow reasonably quick release in the event of a top failure.
