Cruise Control Issues

I recently tried to engage cruise control and just got a clicking sound from the middle of the dash or firewall area and no cruise. It seemed like it clicked as the speed dropped so it seems like the sensor for speed is getting a signal....The only work done recently is new valve cover gasket and new heater hoses. Could a wire/sensor/plug have been dislodged somewhere or does this seem like a part failure?
Thanks, Skip
