The transmission in my 97 900se auto was driving along nicely the other day, and suddenly began to slip, and then we're coasting. No movement in any of the gears. We coasted to the local shop where it sat for 2 days. I was there when they took it in to the hoist, and they drove it in under its own power which seemed strange. Had them do a fluid drain, but they just informed me that they got 1/2 mile down the road when it started again. I can hear a whine from under the car when it does this. Questions:
1) If the pump is bad, why will the car drive any distance?
2) If the pump is bad, is it more cost effective to just replace the whole transmision?
3) Is there an internal filter, and could it be plugged?
4) Shop has a 98 9-5 with same (blown) motor, but trans is good. Will this fit my 97?
Any advice or guidance would be appreciated. We don't have a saab dealer with a mechanic worth his/her weight anywhere closeby, and I don't think my local mechanic knows any other signs/symptoms with this car that might save me from replacing the entire transmission. Thank you.
