diagnosis - rough start under specific conditions.

2002 9-3, 82,000 miles (bought new), has a starting problem but only under the following conditions: (1) engine off for many hours (say, 24); (2) warm or hot outside air temp (say, 70deg F or higher).
The engine stumbles or stalls upon the first start attempt; usually gets going ok on the 2nd attempt. It may then run rough for a few seconds, but then all is ok. Check engine light does not illuminate.
I can usually prevent the initial stall by turning the key until I hear the fuel pump going for a few seconds, and then turning the key the rest of the way to engage the starting motor. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the fuel pump or that fuel pressure bleeds away slowly.
Mechanic wants to replace fuel pump, but I'm not confident that that is necessary. I can live with it the way it is but fear catastrophic failure, though condition has been present and stable for about a year.
Any ideas? Am I at risk for catastrophic failure ?
Thanks.
