I am swapping out my trans in my 1999 9-3 after the diff blew apart the old case.. See pic.
This has been not a good time for this to happen. So I am trying to save money. NIck at gen saab told me not to worry about the hydraulic throw out bearing. There is a noticeable difference in them. The replacement unit seems better. When I spin it it sounds like spinning and old roller skate wheel. I can hear the roller bearings and it feels strong and tight. The old one does not make any bearing noise (like a roller skate wheel) and has much more play feels very sloppy.
I know I should just replace with a new one but at $200ish I will take my chances.
Thoughts what should the bearing sound like if good.
So What I think happened to the old trans..when I got the car 9 months ago the drivers side cv joint seal was leaking and the diff bushing was shot. The fluid did not seem super low but I did not measure what came out. I think that the vibration from the worn bushing did a number on the diff side gear as that is what cracked and made those bad holes in the trans. I just changed the bushing on the "good" unit I bought from the junk yard. There is a BIG difference when you change this. Saab says .8mm of play in the bushing this new unit had at least 2-3 times that much. It is not really that hard to cut out with a good Dremil tool, take your time a rag and a shop vac and you can capture almost all of the filings
