Need help: Why did my serpentine belt break?

I have a '02 9-3 and the cabin fan runs on high and won't shut off even when the car is off. I know that I need to replace the variable speed module. I pulled the fuse until I could get it fixed. Last Thursday, however, I had to drive 250 miles in a heat wave, so I put the fuse back in and drove the car with the fan at full speed so I could get air conditioning. After about 75 miles my serpentine belt shredded and broke. I just had it replaced a few months ago. Would running the fan at full speed have caused the serpentine belt to break?
