As strange as it sounds but you might have both a clutch and transmission problem.
Even with a worn out clutch, gears doesn't "pop out" like that during acceleration so the snap there when that happened could also have accelerated what was already going on inside the transmission.
Since you were able to limp home the car in first gear, the clutch was at least semi ok at that point but you might have killed the rest of it when trying different things and now the clutch disc cannot bite at all.
Since the car is now not drivable it will be a challenge to determine if it needs both or just a clutch and I would not put my name behind and promise that it will only need a clutch but would make sure the customer understand the consequences if they opt for only replacing the clutch.
On the other hand, it is not possible to determine the complete state of transmission on the bench by rolling the drivers and putting it in different gears and watch the clutch shaft rotate. If you see something obviously broken well yes, than it is easy to say you need a transmission as well. But if the popping out is only thing left, that cannot be reproduced on the bench.
