Agree with the other posters' sentiments. I just got a '99 vert for under $3000! That's like less than a year's payment on a new 128i vert lease (probably the least expensive lease on a new convertible out there), before counting taxes. Sales tax and excise tax on new cars can run close to $5000 in the first three years.
IMHO, leases only make sense in two situations:
(1) If "you" really have to have a new car every 3 years, then trading in everything 3 years would be more expensive as the dealer would take advantage of you;
(2) Odd situations where certain cars are heavily subsidized on leases, and you have reasonable faith that the lease end buy-out price can be re-negotiated to below the originally determined residual value. That's only if you are bent on buying a new car anyway. That's what I did with the new 9-5 "lease" back in 2001, with full intention to buy the new car but wanted to take advantage of the low interest rate and residual buy-out renegotiation. Also at the time, it was one month after 9-11, and I thought government response would bring about massive inflation . . . well, that happened too as expected but not so much among cars, especially luxury cars, so the $17k or so cash I paid to buy out the car 3 years later was more debased dollar compared to dollars in 2001 but could have been otherwise put forth towards a different nice new car in 2004 anyway.
