I bought a Viggen with 117k and no PCV update on it. The only reason that you wouldn't even consider the car is if it has no service records (oil change records are esp. important). The car I purchased had records of synthetic oil changes every 5000 miles, so there is a good chance that it will not be toast soon. But the only way to be completely sure is to have the oil pan dropped.
If you like the car and plan on buying, then I would strongly recommend having the pan dropped before you buy. If it reveals a sludge free engine, then you found a good one and it should be a great car. If you find a sludge problem and don't buy it, then you saved yourself a LOT of money.
