An '02 should be a great car if it's been maintained.
I bought my '01 SE with 20K on the clock. It's now at 200K. I've had no major issues. Ball joints were done once, and I've replaced the fan blower motor ($100 part, easy DIY), the pulley bearing on the AC (ditto), flex pipe (small part of the exhaust). The trip computer was replaced on warranty because it lost some pixels... big deal, and there is a fix posted here. And maintenance stuff like brakes pads and rotors (once so far).
The car has been less trouble, plus more comfortable and better performing, than my and my family's recent Toyotas which are similarly (well) maintained. Maybe my car is an exception, but it's the truth.
On this summer's road trip, the car returned 37mpg over 3000 miles. Not bad for a 10y old car with the utility and grunt of the 9-3.
The 02 is very similar to the 01. There may have been a few improvements (such as proper torquing of the headbolts at the factory, on the 02).
Depending where you live, service and repair might be more expensive than domestic and Asian brands. But Saabnet is a great resource for DIY.
Good luck.
