When I swapped 5-speeds a couple of years, I backed the rear tires up on ramps and strapped them so they couldn't roll off the ramps. Then I jacked the front of the car and supported each side with jack stands. Then I slid 2 tires/wheels under each side "just-in-case." I got the car up 18" when measured from the floor to the lowest part of the fender. I should have gone up 3 or 4 more inches. I bought a flat transmission jack from Harbor Freight and supported the engine above with a 4x4 frame and 1/2" threaded rod. When I got the transmission loose and lowered the jack, it was too high to roll out under the car. So, I had to lift the 5-speed off the jack and slide it out seperately. Since the jack had a flat table and the transmission is not flat, I traced the outline of the bottom of the trans, and cut it out on a 2x6, then bolted it to the jack so that the trans wouldn't shift. Replacing the transmission was easier that removal, since the jack could go up/down, left/right and tip front/back. It took an estimated 20 hours, but I only worked in it a few hours a day. For example, I would spray down the bolts with penetrating oil, and let them soak until the next day. If you have the right tools, take your time and are safe and carefull, it's not too hard of a job... Ron
