9-3 engine failure ECU

I need to check ECU program after 3rd engine failure. I am trying to help my daughter's teacher out of a really bad round of repairs from Saab dealers, if you can believe it...(obviously not the reputable ones) Seems the result has always been fixed, not the cause..Records from day one show no updates, MAF,purge valve, etc. at any repair time. I have to remove ECU, and take to dealer. Probably have to remove one in my car, plug this one it when I get there, and check it. Can I find the program with any OBD2 reader or does it have to be Saab? I have been told here at high altitude, (8000-9000ft) I need software 5383 or higher to help avoid detonation failure. If I have like 5381, it was wrong and would fail. Engine has always had premium gas do to this altitude as well as Saab bulletin.
Not sure yet what has failed. No compression in #2 and oil filter full of bearing material, sounds like rod bearing failure. This, according to dealer repair order was an installed "used" engine 10 months/9K miles ago!! They will not extend any help to her at all. They must not have even pulled the pan, looked at trouble spots etc. and certainly did not give customer the option of paying a little extra to do so. So she is stuck with 9K in a car that is worth $0 right now.
I may get another engine and repair it-again. But am doing some failure analysis first. Any advice, info is greatly appreciated as I try to help this lady out a textbook terrible situation.
