On those torque measurements... is "tie rod to steering gear" the inner rods to the rack? And "tie rod end" is the outer end to the strut?
What do you mean by "Then took out the screw on the side and put it in the other way, slowly tightened it, which pushed the tie rod end apart so I could screw it off." The movement I see is that when I grab an inner tie rod by the rod from inside the hood and I pull/push it up and down, I can make the who assembly (both inner tie rods) move gently up and down a little. There's no "play" as you'd see in a worn outer joint, the whole assembly is solid, but I can make the two inner rods move (as a unit) up and down a wee bit.
Should this be solidly bolted to the rack.. and is what they attach to a solid stationary unit? Or is the some movement expected in that area?
