I have the NAPA manually adjustable cable in my '97 900SET, and had some of the same concerns as you have with the Bilstein. Mine was initially stiffer than the OEM cable it replaced, I detached the cable from the transmission end and worked lithium grease into the cable and it seems to be better now. I have had the cable on for about six months now without any problems. I will be re-checking the adjustment when i return to ME from CO next week, as there is a very little bit of noise when clutch is engaged (please don't be the throwout bearing!!). Overall, i have been very satisfied with the cable, and find it very easy to access and adjust by moving the fusebox (no need to remove any wheels or any of the other methods that some other people have found necessary).
Hope this helps.
