My wife's '99 9-3 always had a metallic sort of sound, but cranked fast...and hasn't changed in the 7 years, 50K miles we've owned it. It works just fine. My '01 9-3 makes a more "normal" sound, but seems to crank sluggishly. This also hasn't changed in the 2+ years I've owned the car, and works just fine. My dad's '02 9-5 4cyl is the same.
So, unless there seems to be a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.
