It is pretty straight-forward. You can still drive the car with the part removed. You should be able to remove it in about an hour. I picked up the kit some years ago from a Saab dealer. I think that it was about $14.
Once you remove the passenger side trunk lining, and a couple of the fasteners for the convertible top "bag", you need to remove a couple of set screws, and 3 10mm bolts. Carefully disconnect the electrical connectors (I broke 1 the first time by not being careful). You can then finesse the part out of the car, and apply the repair kit.
I cannot emphasize enough how much putting the washers behind the gear helped the gears to mesh better. I've repaired mine about 1-2 times per year until using the washers. It's been 3 years since I made that repair, and it still works great. The snap ring will not go back on the gear, but I didn't deem it to be an essential part, especially when the gears are engaged.
