I'm using my Palm TX loaded with Tom Tom Navigator and a bluetooth GPS receiver on the dash. The Palm is held in a custom mount on a flexible stalk (RAM mounts) which is attached to the power plug in the lighter socket. It puts the screen just below the SID near the ACC and to the right of the shifter. I turn up the volume and turn down screen brightness.
This is not line-of-sight, but I only use the GPS as a back-up navigational aid when on vacation trips. I'll typically plan and write a cheat sheet for the route beforehand, plus keep a map handy in the car in case the GPS dies mid-route.
I don't like dashboard mounts as they are rarely secure. Saab vents are very hard to mount anything to reliably. The lighter socket mount is secure and out of the way.
