Cabin fan wiring harness melted

2000 9-3 Viggen 4-door.
I noticed my cabin air wasn't blowing, so I did some poking around under the hood. Dug down to the cabin fan... could spin it by hand easily, so it wasn't seized up. Focused on the black wiring harness, where I could measure voltage. The harness comes in (bundled with the windshield wiper cable for a bit before splitting off), and then plugs into a white plastic connector which looks like it has a thermistor, which then has spade clips connecting to 2 wires. I noticed I was seeing 12VDC coming in on the black wiring cable harness, but not on the clips coming out which I assume then go straight into the fan motor.
I tried removing the black wiring harness plug, but had trouble. Eventually got it out, where I then discovered that it had melted a bit. The black plastic melted away in places and covered the contacts in others. Basically ruined.
So my questions are:
1) What might cause this connector to overheat and melt? I understand it might be the fan motor, which I can find for about $100 but not sure if that's it or maybe more too.
2) Where can I obtain a replacement wiring harness? I don't mind cutting the wires and soldering it in but I need the connector with a few inches of wire hanging off.
