Its hard to say without the fault code. There are many faults that can put the transmission into limp home mode. One of the most common is a faulty transmission range switch (neutral safety switch).
Your best bet is to get the codes read right after it does it (if the control unit doesn't see the problem again after a certain number of drive cycles, the control unit will erase the fault)
