I picked up a 2001 Viggen cvt last year with 32k on the clock. It was a Calf. car, so no rust, but you can expect that these vintage cars will be better rust-resistant than c900s. This is one of the positive things that was brought in by GM over the years.
Ensuring that the car has had regular oil changes with synthetic oil will be the number one concern with regard to the prevention of sludge issues.
With the Viggen, the engine is a gem, the platform, less so. Like other Viggen owners, I would recommend having the steering brace, 6 point sub-frame brace, and rear AEB fitted. I also put in poly bushings and a GS strutbrace. The result is not perfect, but a much more controlled, solid driving and performing car.
As the top is hydraulic, you'll want to check the level of the oil (access via the interior of the trunk) to make sure it's up to the spec level. If not, it's realtively straightforward to add this.
Viggen wheels - nice to look at, but being ultralight, they are also ultra soft and therefore don't necessarily stay straight.
These engines vs. the c900 16V have some preventative maintenance points - MAF, DI cassette, and on some earlier models, torque issues with the valve cover bolts - all of which is covered extensively on past board posts.
Net, a fun car to drive, nice to look at, and reliable - assuming the car is properly maintained.
