You might have to use that solvent (whose name escapes me at the moment) that removes stickers and take off both sets. It is used to remove bumper stickers and the like.
I would suggest then refinish the original set with some danish oil and put them back up with a double sided adhesive.
I think it would be easier than trying to clean them while in the car plus the danish oil will put some color back in and make them look close to new again.
Nicole has a great idea with the fishing line. I might also try that with squirting some solvent in behind and work it along.
