For a closure to this thread:
After speaking to a bunch more people, and with dropping temperatures and snow, I decided to forget about the "recommended mechanic" 50 miles away who wanted to charge me $550 to put in their alternator.
I was able to find a local small shop that would let me bring my own alternator (their best price was $240, while I can get one for $120 at Murry's literally across the street). They quoted me ~$200, which seemed fair since I was going to bring my own part.
I took my new Walmart battery out, brought it back to Walmart to fully charge it, then installed it in the Saab and drove it with no lights and low power 11 miles to the mechanic. The entire time, the gear (transmission) light and the battery light was on, but none of the other lights came on...
The mechanic didn't have a problem removing the alternator, but claimed that my downpipe bolts (3 of them) were not removable. After some arguing, I agreed to another $80 for them to remove the fan and put a torch to it. (After I got my car back, I didn't really see any indication of the fan being removed, nor heating/burnt mark on the downpipe or bolts....hmmmm....
Total cost was $270 labor, $120 alternator, $82 new battery.
The car drove ok, (I put 500 miles on it this weekend) and it turned out I only blew the head light bulbs. After replacing the bulbs, both my headlight and fog lights worked again.
Now, I have to fix the noisy ACC intake fan...
