To Shim or not to Shim

The passenger side rear wheel on my Viggen 'vert has a vertical tilt (in at the top: positive camber?); it is slight but visibly different from the drivers side. I've been reading up on shimming the rear hub and downloaded a DIY which looks doable. When I mentioned it to the technician at a really good alignment shop here, he said they do not do shims because they can fall out and the wheel can come off. They do the alignment work for the BMW dealership across the street, so they may have a "money is no object" mentality.
I have yet to read of this in any of the searches I've done in this and other forums; in fact, the bent rear axle seems a common symptom.
Has anyone had any bad experiences with shimming the rear axle to fix camber problems?
