Drivers side mirror question

I recently had my drivers side rear view mirror smashed by a passing car. They were good enough to stop their insurance covered the cost of replacement, but now the mirror does not fold forward. The passenger side mirror does and I remember the drivers side folding both ways as well. I am now trying to convince the insurance company that this was indeed a feature and as such the repair is not complete. My question is, am I crazy in thinking it folds both ways? I used this feature so little in the past that I am now beginning to question whether I am right or not. It is important now though, as I am parking on the street in the Northeast and there is not a lot of room for passing cars, and I want to make sure that should someone cut a little too close again that the mirror will fold out of the way instead of break off again.
