You're probably not going to hurt anything, you could even start the engine in 2nd gear if the revs aren't too high but the whole scheme seems like an awful lot of potential drama on a mountain road to save maybe two bucks worth of gas over 17 miles. I mean, sometimes you have to accelerate out of trouble too. And then there's the extra wear on the brakes.
Oh, as for pollution, the planet's doing just fine.
