For a '98 it's just regular Dexron-III. I use the Super-TECH Dexron-III available a Wal*Mart for cheap in one gallon jugs. The only practical way to deal with this is just to drain the sump, and yes it's just the large hex plug on the bottom. You'll only get about 3 of the approx. 7 qt. capacity this way, but this is so cheap and easy to do, that you can do it a few times over a period of time and you'll end up with almost all new fluid. I try to measure what I drain out fairly accurately to make putting the proper amount back in easier. Now that I've done this three times, I probably do it once every other oil change just to play it safe. ATF is cheap and new transmission is not!
Also, forget about the filter as step #1 to change it would be "Remove the transmission". It is normally only changed if the auto-box is taken apart for something else.
