Doesn't surprise me that Geico is low-balling the estimate. I'd get a few quotes to be able to get a better idea of what the repair should cost. Based on the wide disparity in price I'd say that Geico is on the really low end and the body shop is on the high end.
I like when you take your car to the body shop and the first thing they ask you is "who is paying for the repair?". Should that matter? Well yes it does to the body shop because if you say "my insurance company" they will give an insurance company market competitive estimate. If you say "the other guy's insurance" they will inflate it a bit. And if you say "I am" they will give you a high quote.
I have been going to the same body shop for close to 20 years and I know they always give me fair prices and do very good work. Do they make mistakes every now and then? Yes...but they stand behind their work and have even shown me how to save money on repairs....which takes $$$ out of their pocket at the end of the day.
I'd get 3 prices and send them to Geico. If their estimate is the lowest by a wide margin then you know they are low-balling you.
They are banking on you not getting the work done and just walking away with the least amount of cash.
