What kind of risk do I run if I start the car Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Sun, 1 May 2011 11:34:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
after it has been stored for the winter with a heater core leak? I've lost about 1-1.5 litres of coolant. I suspect it's the o-rings. The parts are on order and I will attend to this soon.
However, the car, after having sat for a few months needs to be driven. I filled the coolant back up to the top, and now with the temperature much higher ~15-20 degrees celsius, it has not leaked any more.
My original plan was to remove the heater core hoses, bypass the heater core as a temporary fix. But, if I can drive the car like this and avoid the pain of removing those hoses, I'd much prefer that.
What sort of risks am I running? There is a little drain tube for coolant to drop out of the car, but I imagine if the leaking is large enough, it may leak inside the car and that's the last thing I want.
If it's stopped leaking now, once I start the car things will heat up and the o-rings will expand. Do you think it's safe to do, with the pressure in the cooling system and all?
Thanks for your thoughts. It's a real pain to get to those hoses at the firewall, especially getting the clamps off.
Bender.
