Coincidentally, I did just what you are talking about last weekend. The front belt--as you surmised--can be fixed by reversing the bottom attachment. The plastic button just pries off with a knife or screwdriver. There is no cover to the belt bottom. The rear belt--at least on mine--was just a matter of the buckle needing to be turned over, not the whole belt. I folded the belt on itself and slid the buckle over the fold until it corrected the problem.
