Since others have confirmed that the vert should have auto-down, here's why then one you drove didn't seem to. When I bought my 2001 5-door a few years ago, the auto-down rarely worked. I popped out the window switch pack from the center console and carefully opened it (some of the contacts will probably fall out). It was quite obvious that certain frequently-used contacts had some corrosion and pitting due to arcing. I cleaned them with fine sandpaper, reassembled and now the auto-down works almost all of the time. It wasn't worth the cost to me to buy a new switch pack for perfect operation.
