Hello all.
I have a 1996 900S, 2.3L non-turbo (so no DI cassette), automatic transmission, 400,000 km. Car is overall in very good shape.
I am experiencing some odd starting behavior. Normally starting sequence is that all the dashboard lights including the warning indicators come on briefly, nice and bright, right before the engine starts to crank, and as soon as it starts they turn off and "test brake light" appears in the SID. At that point you step on the brake pedal and put in in gear. Lately however, when the key is turned, sometimes only a few of the trouble lights come on (rather dimly) and the SID doesn't come on at all, and then the starter motor cranks and cranks but the engine doesn't start or even turn over. I can usually induce the problem by turning the key very slowly to the start position.
Fuel pump, fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relay, main relay, spark plugs, and distributor all appear to be fine. Because the "check gear box" and "sport mode" lights sometime light up when it doesn't start, and the "check gear box" light came on briefly last week while driving (turned off after a few seconds) we replaced the neutral safety switch at the transmission (what a pain in the ass that was), but the starting problem still persists. When it starts, it idles, changes gears, and drives responsively and happily.
It has been very very warm here and the problem seems to occur more when the car is hot and when the A/C has been in use - although it could be my imagination, trying to see connections where none exist. I know already that the thermostat needs to be replaced as the car runs quite cold in the winter (temp never gets to the middle of the gauge), but temperature is running in normal range right now.
One other weird thing that happened last week, shortly after the "check gear box" light came on and then went off again, is that the dash gauges died (almost like "black panel" had been turned on), and then the engine seemed to lose power very briefly, at which point the SID said "checking" and then "check OK", and then everything went back to normal. It was about a five second glitch while driving at highway speed.
Any suggestions or ideas? I have lots of spare parts and am willing to try almost anything that doesn't involve taking the neutral safety switch off again.
thanks
