The NG900 came with motor oil as a tranny fluid. Many an NG900 transmission has been greatly improved (saved!) by a change to the synthetic fluid. My own is a serious testimony to this! The synthetic renews the syncros and returns your tranny to butter like smoothness. Motor oil after many miles clogs them up.
The process is actually easy, although the plugs will be really, really tight if it's never been changed. See the TSB below for plug locations. You will need to grind down or cut the short side of an 8MM allen wrench about 1/4" to get to the drain plug.
The only downside is that to switch to the Saab MTF0063 you have to flush the tranny twice and you blow off some fluid money. They used to have another synthetic that didn't require that (used form '99 to '01), but it looks like it's no longer available. Some people go with a non-Saab synthetic for that reason.
