Hello... I started having shifting trouble on my 96 900SE. It started with what I've seen described here as the rubbery feel, and hard to get into gears. First and second are very tough, sometimes I really need to push to go to first. I can't get it into reverse without grinding, unless I run it through 3rd & 4th, then it will go, but with that rubbery and resistant feel.
I was going to perform the shifter adjustment as described on the platonoff site over the weekend, but on Friday my clutch cable went!! Luckily it did as I was pulling up to my house (the first time my Saab has pooped out in a convenient place). The cable had roughly 75k on it. I saw some recommendations here for a replacement cable from NAPA, but couldn't wait the FIVE days to get it, but I was able to get one the same day from AutoZone (made by ATP, I believe).
After getting the new cable in, I'm still having the rubbery, tough shifting problem. There's no grinding, except in reverse without first going through the other gears. The cable I got is adjustable but it's at its shortest position right now. I did do the shifter adjustment procedure but it made no difference.
So I'm wondering if this is a sign of my shift linkage going out. Or, before dropping the $200+ for that, should I get an OEM cable and try that out? When I visually inspect the linkage I don't see any obvious signs of wear, like pieces of the bushings sticking out or missing (from what I can see).
One further note: when I had the cable last replaced, the new one failed within a week or two. The mechanic (at a Saab-only shop) grumbled that he had replaced it with "upgraded" cable that GM recommended, but he put the original style back in, which I'm assuming is the self adjusting I've read about here, and which I've had no trouble with until now. So I'm a bit confused on what's original, if it's the self adjusting and what could be the upgraded one he was talking about. (I was brand new to the 'joy' of owning a Saab then and didn't think to ask many detailed questions.)
Any thoughts, recommendations, further questions are greatly appreciated.
