This seems to be not too unusual on a 9-3.
This code comes up on my daughter's '99 then goes away. It was like that when we bought the car 2 years ago. The PO (a neighbor) said it had been on and off for at least a year. We use the same indy and he said it means the DI is beginning to head south, but may not be critical. I swapped in my spare DI (an old one) and the code went away. Came back a year later, but is off and on. Is on now but will probably go away again before long.
To really check for sludge you have top drop the pan, but pulling the valve cover lets you see a bit of the top end. And yes, you should replace the VC gasket when you do this. 64K miles (if accurate) is very low for a '01. If it was driven very little sludge could be there, but probably cleaned up if you drop the pan.
