To remove the balance shaft sprocket I just locked the flywheel in place, the balance chain then held the balance shaft and sprocket in place.

My line of thinking is that the balance chain idler sprocket bearing is munched.

I've got the car sitting in my garage on 4 jack stands, oil pan off I might as well take the timing cover off to see what I can see. Ill be able to get the balance and timing chains off at that point and see if there indeed is something wrong with one of the bearings.

Better safe than have a wrecked engine due to a snapped chain.
