Last time I wrote I mentioned that I have had a power steering whine slowly getting louder during the past two years. (I only drive 5K a year or so.)
In any case, now that it is getting colder, the serp belt is squeaking and chirping, especially when turning the steering wheel. After a few minutes, the belt gets quiet.
I presume the PS pump is going BUT, I don't want to just replace the pump, and perhaps have bad lines or a rack. Am not sure if these pumps just get noisy and fail, or if there is a cause.
If the pump is going...does that extra drag hurt the tensioners, alternator, or water pump?
PS fluid has been changed and it did not quiet the pump. No froth or air in the system.
Belt has 47K and is 5 years old, but I do not want to just change the belt or tensioner only to have PS pump seize. Would rather it tear up the old belt if it is going to go.
Any thoughts?
