There are two components to the ignition switch. One is the mechanical portion which includes the lock tumbler and mechanisms that tie to reverse lock, etc. This is mated to the electronic portion which is the actual ignition switch, held to the key mechanism by two small screws. It's a giant PITA to get at it, as you have to remove the entire console and stack going up to the dash. I just did this job on my '97, replaced the key mechanism as it failed similarly to yours. I have the ignition switch part; I'd sell for $25.
Good luck!
