Not really but it is a few that manage to repair a misfire problem when the black cover had cracked and they replaced just the cover. The spark was leaking out through the crack to cylinder head instead of over spark plug electrodes.
When the first generation IDMs came out, in 90-92, which in fact had separate coils, Saab even came out with a bulletin saying that if a coil goes bad, the whole IDM should NOT be replaced but only the defective coil.
That bulletin became mote with the introduction of the new IDM in 93 which had the coils secured with epoxy and it has stayed that way ever since.
