Acceleration problem

I was away for three months and my 1997 900S automatic hadn't been driven during this whole time. I finally drove it today when I noticed the car kept accelerating even when gas pedal was not depressed. I had to pull to the shoulder, pump the brakes and pull the e-brake to stop the car. After I made it to a safe side street, I parked and turned off the engine. With the engine off, I pressed the accelerator a few times just to check whether something was sticking or jammed and noticed there was no resistance like normal. I pressed it down to the floor far too easily. I turned on the ignition and just as I thought, the car revved up to 3500 RPM. I quickly turned off the engine for fear of blowing up the engine. I lifted the hood and flicked the gas pedal cable lever (behind the motor oil cap) a few times. Then I got back into the car and noticed that the gas pedal resistance had returned. I flicked it a few times and then I turned on the engine and it was back to normal (900 RPM on park). Has anyone had this issue before and should I get this checked out or have I fixed the problem already? TIA!
