"Should" vs. "Could"...
If you don't live in a cold climate, 5w40 is probably a better choice than 0w40. It is easier to get.
I live in an area where we see extreme cold. Right now it is -25F. We see -55F at least once a winter. So 0w40 is what I want.
There is still plenty of speculation on what is best. Here are some notes I'v gleaned so far:
1) Do manufacturers recommend a thinner oil because it is best for the engine, or are they trying to increase fuel economy at the expense of slight engine wear?
2) As an engine ages and clearances increase, it makes sense to switch to a slightly thicker oil (say at 100k). So what about a new engine or an engine that already comes with 5w40?
3) Is higher oil pressure ALWAYS good and does it actually mean the engine is better off, or is it just that the pump is working harder to push thicker oil through the engine?
4) Some oils rated at 30 actually test closer to 40, others test right at 30. Some rated at 40 might test up to 5 either direction. So depending on what brand you choose, you may not get what you think you are getting.
5) The actual test to determine viscosity means nothing to a running engine. The important info is what happens to the oil at high temperatures and pressures. Can it stay in the game or does it break down? Some of the ratings on the oil can help determine this, other times they don't.
Bottom line, Mobil 1 0w40 is universally considered a very good oil, so I'm going to give it a try on three of my vehicles. All three officially support a 40 weight oil, so there shouldn't be any issues.
